Smackdown Results – 2/26/19
Charlotte, North Carolina
Spectrum Center
Commentary Team: Tom Phillips, Corey Graves & Byron Saxton

The show opens with Stephanie McMahon, Shane McMahon, Daniel Bryan, and Erick Rowan in the ring for a contract signing.

Shane and Steph welcome us to the show and introduce Bryan, pointing out that the chair he’s sitting in is leather. They give Kofi Kingston a big intro, talking up his WWE career and especially his recent rise to contendership for the WWE Championship. New Day come out with their man and he makes a point of circling around the ring and slapping hands on his way in.

Kofi says after eleven years, all he wanted was a chance, and it’s happening, baby! He knows this moment would have not been possible without his brothers in the New Day, and he also knows this wouldn’t have been possible without all the tweets and support from the WWE Universe, who demanded it and made it happen. And at Fastlane, he’s gonna do what everyone’s wanted to see him do for a very long time…

Big E and Xavier Woods encourage him to “get that wood” and he continues, saying he’s gonna beat Daniel Bryan and become WWE Champion. Wordless, Bryan signs at Shane’s behest and Kingston savors the moment before putting pen to paper–

Enter Vincent Kennedy McMahon. He says Kofi’s extraordinary, but before he signs he wants to tell him personally how much he appreciates his accomplishments over the past eleven years. Truly remarkable, however… it’s incumbent upon him as chairman of the board to give them the best competition, the highest box office, therefore he’s replacing Kingston with a man that is, frankly, more deserving.

New Day lose their mind as Vince continues, calling his man more qualified and introducing him… KEVIN OWENS! Owens makes his entrance and takes a seat and signs the contract. New Day storm off, rightfully disgusted and asking why this happens every single time Kofi’s on the brink of getting what he’s earned. (If people hated Vince for the Becky decision then now they want his head on a spike. The rumored Mania match was Owens vs Bryan so this makes me think they’ve inverted the 2, moving Kevin’s up a month & giving Kofi the Mania spot)

Owens is talking to the McMahon children about how glad he is Vince is recognizing his contributions to the industry.

He calls out the smug look on Bryan and Rowan’s faces and says he wants to team with Kofi against the two of them tonight. The McMahons say they’ll take it under consideration and he leaves.

THE BAR VS THE HARDY BOYZ:

Bar with a Double Back Elbow on Jeff for a 2 count, Whisper in the Wind on both of them, Matt with Delete Smashes, Side Effect on Cesaro for a 2 count, Middle Rope Elbow Drop for a 2 count, Cesaro blocks the Twist of Fate and sends Matt in to the rope, Sheamus with a Running knee from the apron for a near fall, Spike White Noise, but Matt ducks, Jeff catches Cesaro with a Twist of Fate, Matt with a Twist of Fate on Sheamus then Jeff finishes it with The Swanton Bomb for the win

WINNERS: THE HARDY BOYZ

Backstage, Ricochet and Aleister Black are talking strategy ahead of their match against Rusev and Shinsuke Nakamura when Lana rolls up. She says she doesn’t know what the fuss is about, they’re nothing special and quite ordinary, just two opponents that are going to get crushed. Ricochet points out they beat the Revival on Raw but that’s okay, he loves how people who tell him he’s nothing special look when he proves them wrong.

Black says he gets it, she fears the unknown, but the only thing you need to know about him is written on his flesh, and he’ll translate– tonight, Rusev and Nakamura will fade to black

R-Truth is in the ring with Carmella and he begins, asking if we want the truth. He says ever since he was a little kid he wanted to be like his hero, John Cena. (Shouldn’t that be the other way around? Truth debuted 2 years before Cena or are they completely ignoring Truth’s run as K-Kwik) So he’s gonna follow in John’s footsteps by continuing the United States Championship Open Challenge and that starts… when? Carmella says it starts right after–

DANCE BREAK!

Before he can continue, here comes Andrade “Cien” Almas! AND REY MYSTERIO! He takes Almas out and R-Truth tells them to calm down and says he has a dilemma right now, he’s at a crossroads. At moments like this he asks himself what John Cena would do, and Mella says he’d fight both at once. Ron is shocked and says he’s brave, he was thinking more like “no thank you”, but he’s gonna make John proud!

Charlotte Flair makes her entrance.

She talks about how Mr. McMahon made the main event of Fastlane even better at the top of the show tonight, almost as important as when he put her into the main event of WrestleMania against Ronda Rousey. She does exactly what is asked of her, unlike Lynch or Rousey, and she always delivers. Media, charity, live events, the main event, she’s the gold standard.

She would never have laid down the title when she was champion, and Becky and Ronda are afraid of her. Fear makes you do irrational things, and Lynch fears exposed (right like all the times Becky beat Charlotte last year in every one on one title matc) while Rousey fears getting another beatdown like at Survivor Series (a night Charlotte knew she couldn’t get the job done & got herself dqed to avoid being pinned or submitted) but Flair fears nothing and no one (DON’T. YOU. BELIEVE. IT!). Ronda Rousey has some thoughts on what a true champion is, and Charlotte runs a clip of her saying just that in November, talking about standing guard in sickness and in health.

Flair and Ronda agree on this, but she says the difference is she’ll never quit and she’ll never lay the title down, because she’s the true champion, and that’s why next Monday she’ll be on Raw so Mr. McMahon can crown her the new Raw Women’s Champion

ALEISTER BLACK & RICOCHET VS RUSEV & SHINSUKE NAKAMURA:

Ricochet with a Dropkick for a 2 count on Nakamura, Springboard European Uppercut then a Standing Shooting Star Press for a 2 count, Rusev avoids the Phoenix Splash, but Ricochet lands on his feet, he ducks The Machka Kick, Crossbody, but Rusev catches him with a Catatonic for a 2 count, Ricochet slides under an attempt at The Accolade, Sasuke Special, Inverted Exploder and looks to finish Aleister but he strikes first with Black Mass for the win

WINNERS: ALEISTER BLACK & RICOCHET

AJ Styles is interviewed backstage and says he’s happy to hear that Roman Reigns is in remission, it’s great news.

Asked how he’s moving forward he says he gets it, he’s his harshest critic and nothing can be said that he hasn’t already asked himself. He sets the standards for himself and anything less than perfection is a disappointment, so he keeps pushing to be the best. He’s partly to blame for the rise of Daniel Bryan because he had an opportunity to stop it and he didn’t succeed.

That doesn’t mean he’s gonna stop trying, though. Perhaps you’ve forgotten how long it took him to get to WWE– 15 years and nothing was ever given to him, so he’s gonna stop listening to the critics, pick himself up, dust himself off, and keep fighting to justify his claim that this is the House That AJ Styles Built.

As he finishes, Randy Orton rolls up next to him and scoffs at his claim that he built this place before walking off.

Lacey Evans makes her entrance and then makes her exit once again

KOFI KINGSTON & KEVIN OWENS VS THE NEW DANIEL BRYAN & ROWAN:

Rowan with a Dropkick on Owens for a 2 count, Kofi with a Penalty Kick for a 2 count, Owens with a Tope con Hilo, Rowan with a Pumphandle Backbreaker on Kofi for a 2 count, Rowan slams Kofi on the floor back in for a 2 count, Big Splash for a 2 count, Bryan with a Superplex for a 2 count, another cover for a 2 count, Kofi with a rollup, but Bryan counters into The LeBell Lock, but Kofi makes it to the rope, Bryan with the Running Corner Dropkicks, Kofi counters the third into a Leaping Mushroom Stomp, Owens with a Cannonball, Rowan with the Claw, but Owens fights out and sends him to the floor with a Superkick, Bryan charges but Kevin counters with a Pop-Up Sit-Out Powerbomb for a near fall, up top, but Rowan sends him to the floor, Kofi wipes out Kofi with an Imploding Senton, Bryan sends Owens back in, he charges for the Busaiku Knee, but Kevin evades and hits a Stunner for the win

WINNERS: KEVIN OWENS & KOFI KINGSTON
